CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded

Post by Grond »

I flashed to the bp6ru125 bios before installing Win2K and I got the above error. There were a bunch of bad commands at the command line before the flash program ran then the program seemed to write just fine and after I exited it got a bunch more bad commands at the command line. When it booted back up is when I got the checksum error. Windows 98 loaded just fine though and I set ACPI and APM to enabled and MPS to 1.4 and reformatted. When I ran the Win2K boot floppies I got ntkrnlmp.exe could not load. The knowledge base says its a BIOS problem. I tried setting ACPI and APM to disabled but that didn't help. The bp6ru125.bin was off this website as well as the award.exe, I used the abitfae from the win2k install floppy from gamerssquad. I was hesitant to use that one because it had the RU and NJ bios and the HPT 1.22 and 1.25 files. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be added to a bootable floppy or they were just providing the files for you to pick from. I used abitfae bp6ru125.bin to run the program, I didn't use any switches. The boot screen says its the RU bios and the HPT125 bios. I tried hitting f6 during the win2k installation to install third party drivers but it doesnt seem to acknowledge it and goes on to the hardware detection.

Did you double check that all CMOS settings for cacheable ROMS were disabled before the flash?
If you're sure that was not the problem, try the jumper to clear the CMOS, and then go back & set things the right way. This should fix errors.

You will need to load the matching Win2K driver for the HPT366 controller.
For the RU BIOS version 1.25 shoud be right.

Yes the caches were disabled. Setting the cpu speed has been very bizarre. I orignally tried the stock settings 433/66 but when booting up it would report it as 400 and refuse to boot. I had to disable the speed hold and set it to 6.5x 94 mhz. It reports this as 500 but it finally would boot. I'm thinking about doing all the bios updates again but one at a time this time. Which order should I use? Does only the ru.bin need the abitfae file? The ru and hpt are reporting the correct versions, I'm not sure about the award.

Have you tried to use the BP6FSB.EXE utility to creep your FSB spped up any higher than 94MHz?
My BP6 that recently got a CPU upgrade to P-III/1100E will not boot with the FSB faster than 98MHz. Goes right up to 110MHz after WinXP loads using the utility, and runs stable at 110 for days on end.

I still haven't figured out what's stopping the boot at >98 FSB - planning to flash the BIOS with the version that does the HPT366 lobotomy soon to see if that solves the problem.
