FS - BP6, 2 x c366, etc.
Well it's been a fun ride but my BP6 just isn't being used any more. I've put it up on eBay - item number 220076754247. I guess I should have posted it here first to see if anyone wanted it; oh well. Anyway, I'm selling it with 2 C366, 3 PCI cards (video, NIC, sound), original box and manual. A full...

Class action suit agains Abit
Sorry if this is common knowledge - I didn't see it posted and thought it might be of interest to some. I was flipping through the March '05 PC World today and an item on page 30 caught my eye. The ad is about a class action suit against Abit for bad caps on a bunch of mobos. The BP6 is NOT on the l...

Nice little exchange here guys; thanks. Just thought I'd put in my $0.02 from a Linux newbie perspective. Well, actually I may not fully qualify as a Linux newbie since I used to develop X-windows servers and their DDX layers on Unix back in the late '80s. But it has been a very long time since I've...

Thanks for the tip !purrkur wrote:Thanks for the update Lungster. Just FYI, I checked the Xandros website and there is indeed a forum there for support where users help each other solve problems in the usual Linux spirit. the site is found here.

two steps forward.... one step back....
Just an update. I tried SuSE 9.1 one more time figuring maybe it'll work better with the Matrox card instead of the nVidia. Nope; the screen went black when it was time to log in. So that's 2 strikes on SuSE and that's enough for me. I installed Xandros and it is indeed very nice. It couldn't find m...

purrkur: - The NIC is PCI - an Intel part. I used it under Windows because its drivers were always MP-stable. Not sure if it's supported by typical Linux distros. I should have a spare Linksys somewhere I can drop in; or I'll go with your recommendation on the RTL based NIC. - The Nvidia AGP card is...

Seeking Linux recommendation for BP6
So here I am with my BP6 scrubbed clean of everything. I'm looking for a version of Linux that will allow me to play around with it, learn some stuff, develop some code, set up a web server, etc. I used to use Unix exclusively over a dozen yrs ago so I figure it'll all come to me sooner or later. In...

I'm still around; stop in occasionally to check out what's new (usually when I get in that upgrade mood; actually it's a disease - "upgradeitis"). But I finally tossed in the towel this weekend. My need for speed surpassd my devotion to the BP6; and I got this dual P3 for free :) Actually I tried in...

powered subwoofer
For $400 you can get a decent powered subwoofer with a built-in variable low-pass crossover. Bass shakers are nice for that "sensaround" appeal but nothing truly replaces real bass frequencies to rattle the gut. Check out Hsu Research <http://www.hsuresearch.com/> for real subwoofer technology witho...

Retiring my BP6... well sort of.
Well after many years of faithful service, I'm finally retiring my BP6 (2x C366 @ 505). It took the better part of 2 days to back-up and migrate everything to a dual P3 Xeon/1Ghz box (hey, gotta stay with duallies!). But wait... it's not fully retired yet. I plan on turning it into a part-time Linux...

Single 90mm CPU fan
Thought someone might find this useful - I've been running my BP6 with a single 90mm fan over the CPUs instead of the usual one fan per heatsink. Here a description of what I did.

...also check all other parts for poor solder joints. Some may be hard to see - like the ones under BGA packages. It sounds like you have a thermal expansion problem. Heat up some poor joints and they seperate. We had similar problems with this card I'm working on at work. We reflowed the solder on ...

If theres nothing in processor 1 then the reg happily stays cool but as soon as somethings plugged in, something causes it to become ridiculously inefficient :( A little late for a reply I guess, but.... Check both the input and output voltage to the regulator you're using. Make sure it's consisten...

If a MP system is converted to UP (Dual 366@500 => Single PIII/1100E) and it still shows the MP Kernel is running for WinXP Pro, does the OS have to be reinintalled to get rid of the MP kernel?? With W2K there is a way to "downgrade" that involves copying and renaming some core system files. I'm no...

An MP kernel running on an SP system will run slower because the MP kernel is compiled with all of the MP locks in place. These are the locks that would normally be used to prevent contention between the 2 processors. In an SP environment, each CPU has its own IRQL to handle preemption and interrupt...

HCT Stress Testing of your BP6
I haven't been on this forum since the early days of the BP6 when Vtt mod'ing was all the rage. Those of you from back then (who are still around) may remember that I was very fond of using Microsoft's HCT kit for stability checking. Well, I finally got around to writing up an article about it (yeah...
